The current program portfolio in Uganda includes health, peace building, gender-based violence, economic recovery and agribusiness, and children & youth. IRC has a country office in Kampala, a regional office in Lamwo, Moroto, West Nile and in South western Uganda. Given the conflict outbreak in South Sudan, IRC extended its services to Palabek refugee settlement to support refugees being settled in Lamwo district.
Job Summary: Under the supervision of Community Health Officer, the Health Assistant volunteers will be responsible for hygiene and sanitation at the Health Unit and community. He/she will be expected to work within the heath facility, health posts and community in the IRC supported health facilities’ catchment population and collaborate with the integrated community health program to implement health activities. She/he will spend approximately 80% of his/her time in the field both at the health facility, health posts and in the community. .
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Implement Community Based Environmental Health Activities
- Enforce Environmental Health Act, Regulations and By-laws
- Compile and submit relevant basic health data to the Health Inspector and or Community Health officer
- Compile quarterly sanitation data coverage for zones in catchment area
- Conduct daily supervision of hygiene and sanitation within the catchment area
- Compile and submit monthly community health information data
- Supervise VHT activities within the catchment area
- Conduct weekly meetings
- Support client follow-up for defaulting clients especially TB and HIV, and where applicable supervise CB dots
- Health education and health promotion both at health facility level and community
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal applicant must have a Certificate in Environmental Health Science or its equivalent from a recognized institution.
- Must be registered and licensed with the Allied Health Professionals Council.
- Quality environmental sanitation
- Plans allocation of staff, funds and facilities to deliver on expected outputs;
- Able to define and attain targets within set time frames
- Able to appreciate and support change initiatives.
- Enforcement of procedures that promote quality and standard health service delivery
- Communicates effectively by giving clear, concise and accurate information
- Results oriented with ability to assist the unit achieve its overall objectives.
