The mission of the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is to strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases through research and capacity development. IDI has six operational areas through which it works to achieve its mission: Prevention, Care and Treatment; Training, Global Health Security, Research and Laboratory services (provided through a partnership with the Makerere University- John Hopkins University Core Lab) and Outreach.
About CDC Project:
The Global Health Security Partner Engagement project with funding from U.S Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is carrying out surveillance for Acute Febrile illness at different 4 surveillance sites; Mubende, Kabale, Arua and Jinja. The overall goal is identifying the leading causes of non-malarial acute febrile illnesses in multiple geographic regions of Uganda, the antimicrobial susceptibility of bacterial pathogens and building a sustainable laboratory and surveillance capacity with focus on vector- borne & zoonotic diseases.
Job Summary: The Laboratory Technologist will be based at a project site which is a selected RRH. He/she will take lead providing Technical Assistance to support day-to-day project activities at the facility that focus on strengthening microbiology services and general LQMS, disease surveillance, real-time reporting and AMR surveillance. He will be required to sample collection, analysis, Packaging and preparation for transportation.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform routine laboratory techniques for the surveillance of AFI and AMR, including but not limited to collect, transport, storage of quality samples (blood, urine, stool, CSF, urethral and cervical swabs), culture, identification and susceptibility testing, isolate storage and referral in line with Good Clinical Laboratory Practices.
- The incumbent will support and mentor the facility staff in increasing capacity (training, mentorship and provision of tools) for routine patient care and surveillance.
- Strengthening microbiology LQMS including development and use of SOPs and .Bench Aids Internal Quality control systems, EQA Document and Record control systems, Equipment and supplies management system, Bio safety and Bio security systems, Customer care and identification and management of occurrences
- Perform and ensure effective sample collection, handling, packaging and referral procedures are in place and implemented in line with approved procedures and guidelines.
- Ensure that QA procedures are in place and are implemented.
- Assist in maintaining day to day laboratory stock levels.
- Ensure routine and periodic maintenance of equipment is performed and documented.
- Works closely with the national reference Laboratory to fulfil monthly isolate and data submission requirements for the surveillance of AMR.
- Participate in EQA in line established guidelines and maintain records.
- Ensure implementation of laboratory quality management systems in microbiology in line with established standard utilizing the SLMTA and SLIPTA approach.
- Ensure implementation of laboratory information system following established guidelines.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal applicant must hold a Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology
- Excellent skills in microbiology lab work.
- Experience in related laboratory systems strengthening and good report writing skills
